Forget the owls sending you letters from Hogwarts, this new game will be a sure-fire way to help you live your life as a wizard.

Spellbreak is a mage-based Battle Royale game published by indie company Proletariat Inc. in September of 2020. The game is set in the continent of Velnor, in a place that was once known as the Highlands, but now only called the Hollow Lands. The people of Velnor are divided into two major factions: the VowKeepers and VowBreakers. The VowKeepers or Keepers have sworn an oath to stay away from to prevent the soul-corrupting nature that accompanies it. The VowBreakers or Breakers, as their name suggests, are those who have chosen to break that sacred vow.

When you first step inside the world of Velnor, you are greeted by a mysterious mage who then introduces herself as Avira Emberdane, the leader of the VowBreakers. She invites you to become a Breaker and teaches you the ropes in utilizing the magic that exists in the world.

Gameplay

The game breathes a fresh new air to the battle royale genre as it takes you out on a world filled with spell-slinging and levitating that’s sure to get your heart racing! Dive into the action as a Breaker who uses Gauntlets laden with brilstone, magic stones found across the world, to dish out magical spells to your enemies. Fight to the death, or outwit your adversaries by hiding and avoiding the Spellstorm for as long as possible.

Unique Mechanics

Spellbreak makes the battle royale genre fresh again by introducing new mechanics in-game, such as the following:

Alchemy

As a VowBreaker, your main weapon of choice are magic-infused Gauntlets which contain elemental powers within them. These elements are Frost, Lightning, Fire, Toxic, Stone, and Wind. Play around these elements, as certain combos work well in certain situations.

Runes

Runes are pocket power-ups that you can equip on your character to provide you with certain advantages such as teleportation, temporary flight, increased jump height and speed, invisibility, among others. But, you have to be careful as to which runes you equip though, as you can only equip one of them and cannot store them in you backpack.

Mana Mechanics

Although the game does not feature a reload mechanic for you magical “guns”, it feature a mana system which all your attacks, abilities, and levitation use as a resource. Each cast of your Gauntlet’s basic attack takes off a bit of mana, your powered abilities take away a larger portion of mana, and you constantly drain your mana as you levitate around the battlefield. The mana regeneration doesn’t take too long, so it won’t be a problem most of the time, except for critical situations such as crossfires, and sudden encounters with another player.

Spellbreak was officially released into the world on September 3, 2020, however it was released free to play on Steam on December 16 of the same year. The game has been received well by the community, harboring an astounding 8/10 from IGN.
