Regional rankings adapted for 2020 CS:GO Majors
With the restrictions set up all over the globe because of the coronavirus pandemic, teams competing for the ESL One Rio Major will have to earn their invites through regional rankings.
In a statement, Valve cited foreseeable difficulties in travel as a major factor that led to the revamp.
The ESL One Rio Major was supposed to take place on May 11th to 24th, but was forced to postpone as COVID-19 was progressing. A proposal was then made to combine the two major events and increase the prize pool to $2,000,000.
Instead of direct invites, 24 teams will qualify in the November Major based on regional rankings, which will be updated depending on a team’s performance in a Regional Major Ranking competition.
Currently, there are two planned RMR events for May and the coming Fall season. Tournament organizers may modify their 2020 events into RMR series
The first RMR event will be hosted by ESL in May. Valve has yet to finalize the list of RMR events, which will be important to determine the points distribution.
Current Legends and Challengers of the season will have to prove their titles in their respective regions
The game developers also provided information on the distribution of invites in every region as follows:

The distribution of the invites was based on the results of the 2019 Berlin Major.
Given the current circumstances, teams will be competing in the region they are currently located in.
