South.GG Exclusives: Getting to know Chibiby
South.gg is an esports news organization that aims to bring the spotlight to Bisaya esports talents. We sit down with them and give them the floor as they talk about their life, experience in esports, and their future goals.
Crisostomo “JR” Tan, Jr., most commonly known in the Filipino Dota 2 scene as Chibiby, is an ex professional DotA player and “DotA God”, who is now one of the streamers under South.gg. When asked about his IGN, here’s what he had to say, “Chibiby? [It’s] because hilig ko ug chibi nga anime kay chuyan ko nila sa una, unya gipun-an ra nako ug “by” para cute paminawon.(I chose Chibiby because I really liked chibi anime back then, and I added the ‘by’ to make it sound cuter.)”
Chibiby has played in a lot of tournaments, playing under various teams such as Schooled (ScH), Latos, and Arcanys Gaming, to name a few. “Thirteen years na ko gaduwa’g DotA, way back in DotA 1 pa, katong sa Warcraft III (I’ve been playing the game for thirteen years now, way back in DotA 1, when it was still just a Warcraft III mod),” said Chibiby, when asked about how long he has been playing the game.
After leaving the pro scene of DotA, Chibiby turned to streaming, where he says that it was mostly started out of his “tripping”, after a discussion he had with his girlfriend. “Ana ko nga kaya man nako ni ilahang gibuhat, unya dream sad jod nako ang getting paid while playing games. Now, I’ve been streaming for two years and counting, from 2018 until today (I told her that I could do what they were doing too, and that it was also my dream to get paid while playing games. Now I’ve been streaming for two years and counting, from 2018 until today),” Tan said. Chibiby is also part of several esports entertainment groups aside from South.gg, like Tier One Entertainment and Lupon WxC, to name a few. Check out one of his videos here:
Chibiby dreams of shining the light of the esports trend towards the hidden talents of the Bisayan esports community. That is a dream also shared by South.gg.
That is why, when we asked him on the why and how of his involvement as South.gg, this is what he had to say, “Before pa ko gi-offeran ni Boss Bien to work with him in his dream, naa nasad na nako nga dream nga i-angat ang Cebuano/Bisaya scene sa DotA og sa uban esports games (Even before Boss Bien offered me a chance to join his passion project, I already had it in me to uplift the Cebuano/Bisaya scene in DotA and esports in general).”
Currently, Chibiby works in South.gg as one of its talents, and manager of future talents that would like to be taken into the South.gg family. He occasionally plays games with the members of South.gg on-stream, and sometimes casts in Dota 2 tournaments held by the organization.
