Dreamhack postpones Summer and Dallas festivals, Masters re-evaluated

Swedish organizer DreamHack has announced on Twitter on March 19 the postponement of two big digital festivals and convention.

The DreamHack Summer 2020 which is supposed to take place on June 12-14, 2020 was moved to August 6-9 at Elmia in Jönköping, Sweden. Meanwhile, DreamHack Dallas 2020, originally scheduled on May 20-24, was moved to August 14-16 at Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. Ticket sales for the Summer event were also temporarily halted.

According to their official statement, the postponement of the Summer event will also mean that the annual DreamHack Masters will no longer be co-hosted by DreamHack Summer.

“As a result of DreamHack Summer being rescheduled, due to the recent developments surrounding the global COVID-19 outbreak, DreamHack Masters will no longer be hosted alongside DreamHack Summer in Kinnarps Arena,” part of the statement said.

DreamHack also stated that they are currently in continuous dialogue with the Counter-Strike Professional Players Association on how to proceed with the Masters.

As provided to HLTV.org, the current dates of the Masters are still kept on June 12-14.

A separate announcement in March 18 said that they are continuously working with health advisors, city officials & venue partners for their remaining 2020 events.

Marcus Lindmark, DreamHack’s co-CEO said in a statement that the decision to move the events was not taken lightly by stakeholders, but felt the need to put safety into priority.

“We have evaluated legislators’ decisions to temporarily suspend events where large groups of people gather, and the need for so many to shelter in place at this time — all of which have informed our decision to put the wellness of our communities first”

Ticket holders to the Summer and Dallas events are given an optional refund until April 19, while those with tickets containing access to the Masters event will automatically receive a full refund.

So far, only BIG and Gen.G are the confirmed teams to participate in the Masters.

Furthermore, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate European Circuit Grand Finals and the Hearthstone Masters Tour is also being evaluated by the organizers and has yet to release an update. Both events were planned to be co-hosted with the Summer.

On March 12, the organizers also cancelled their DreamHackTour in France, also citing COVID-19 as one of the factors for the decision.
